I mile NE of Horncliffe, the bridge was the first suspension bridge in Europe to carry vehicular traffic 1820 to the designs of Captain Samuel Brown RN. He was the inventor of the wrought-iron chain link. The span of the suspension chains is 480 feet, several times larger than any existing spans of any kind then in W. Europe.

Brown also designed the chain piers at Newhaven and Brighton.
